In the winter of 2012, there was an irruption of snowy owls from their normal wintering grounds. They were seen as far south as Texas that year. This one was found perched in Western Nebraska.
An unusual siting in Western Nebraska, I do not think his coloring is helping him blend in. Snowy owls are another owl species that primarily hunts during day.
Some times it is better to be lucky than good. Upon spotting this owl, we hurried to get pictures before it flew away. It wasn't until after getting home and looking at the photos did we notice the horse shoe underneath.
